Y Suites on Margaret
The project committed to working with connecting to Country framework to create a unique building that references and acknowledges key indigenous cultural practices and traditions. The ancient art of weaving has been used as an Indigenous method to create food tools, baskets, fishing nets and skin cloaks for warmth for centuries. The architectural interpretation of the art of weaving was adopted to provide a rich, tactile metaphorical “basket” or podium to house the building. The weaving pattern enhances the permeability of the building, whilst also encouraging the engagement and connections between the resident and broader community. In a way, it is curating the streetscape program to provide a didactic and accessible experience, with reference to traditions, past and present.
This purpose-built 18-storey student accommodation development provides 410 beds with associated indoor and outdoor communal spaces located on multiple levels, and retail tenancies on ground floor. The building is expressed as two tower forms, emphasised through height and setback strategies, and defined through an articulation that supports the transition of precinct granularity. A central spine is established within the building program that facilitates natural ventilation, light, and outlook from the corridors. Common areas are located across the building to enhance the social dynamic and access to amenity.
The design provides a built form outcome that is highly considered, respectful and contextually fitting, whilst contributing positively to an evolving precinct.
The site offers three frontages and the opportunity to contribute to a meaningful public domain environment that would enhance connectivity and integrate with the through site link. The design integrates well with the streetscape pattern emerging on Regent Street, whilst also having regard for both its transitional location and proximity to a heritage building.
‘Mana-gubra,’ a five-storey mural created by First Nations artist Leanne Tobin and curated by Nicole Monks, is located on a prominent facade of the building.
